Audience needs to
recognise genre quite quickly in order to carry on watching something. People
often like certain genre of
programme and expect a film or TV series will be like other ones they‘ve seen
before. Film makers deliberately use certain conventions such as costumes or
mood so the audience knows what to expect.
Narrative
Misfits
The story starts
with Curtis who is the main character in a youth community centre doing
community service for drug possession. You
then have a flashback to the club and him buying the drugs and getting
arrested. His mind then replays the event and he imagines what would happen if
he doesn’t buy the drugs. Everything goes great until he realises this sequence
of events results in a terrible murder of his friends.
His mid then
replaces the event of his arrest where he imagines getting arrested again so
the murder doesn’t take place even though he knows he will be arrested at it
might ruin his running career. It is a complex plot and you are never quite
sure if what you’re seeing is actually happening or he’s imagining it.
Curtis is the main
character ( below left). The other main character is his ex-girlfriend who
didn’t get arrested in the end (second from left), his current girlfriend (third
from left) who he is with at the community centre and the curly head boy he had
met in the car park (right).
The narrative is
non liner because it has several flashbacks. The reason that there are
flashbacks is the whole story is about what could have happened if he could
have done something differently so it
needs the flashbacks explore would could have happened. The effect of the flashbacks
is to make the story more interesting and a bit confusing so you try to
understand what’s happening.
Representation
Skins
This character on
the left is the alpha male. He is popular attractive he behaves very
confidently and seems to taunt people and dresses better than the rest. Jumping
on the table with the flare shows his confidence is exaggerated and this
entertains the audience as the taking incident as it makes it easier to dislike
him.
The character on
the right is a juvenile delinquent/ rebel. He Dresses badly, fights viscously and acts
like he’s crazy. What is exaggerated is that he looks small and friendly but
act surprisingly nasty.
The character to
the left is juvenile delinquent. She’s dressed sexily and acts like she just
couldn’t care and is unaware of the mayhem going on around her. Her kissing scenes are exaggerated and more
like an adult film. This entertains the audience by exciting them.
The character on
the right is sarcastic self-aware. She mouths something sarcastic when she
enters the pub and seems to be looking down on the locals. She is exaggerated
by being dressed deliberately more attractively than the rest.
This character is
popular attractive. He behaves cocky and slightly arrogant and he is very good
looking. He flirts with other people at
the bar which is an exaggeration having only just walked in the pub.
The uses of
exaggerated youth stereotypes are important in this sequence to distinguish
them from the other youngish people in the pub and to justify why they end up
hating each other and start a fight.
The episode fits
the audience expectations of youth since most adults think teenagers are loud,
careless, thoughtless, drink too much, have sex too much. Many teenagers
watching it probably want to be this way or Know somebody who is like this so can
associate with it.
Misfits
Popular attrctive. He
dresses in quailty sporty clothes and acts like a bit of a hero . The
differences between his sporting side and desperate attempt to buy drugs and
escape the police is exaggurated and makes it intresting. You feel sorry for
him being stuck in this terrible world.
Juvenile delinquent/rebel.
She screams and makes a lot of fuss trying to buy drugs. Her appearance is
quite brooding with short black and lots of black makeup.
Popular attractive . Very
knowing about sex and drugs and seems older than her age.
Sarcastic
self-aware. Acts very cocky and sarcastic in an exaggerated manner. Hs argument with the sweet shop owner makes
him very unlikeable for adults but his cockiness may appeal to teenagers.
Reclusive/Trouble outsider. Seems a loner
spends most of the time drunk and smoking also throws up. Recognisable due to
heavy smudged make-up and slurring voice. Exaggerated as drunk and
unpleasant.
